Assistant Editor - Sceptre, Hodder & Stoughton
What you’ll be doing
You will report to the Publishing Director and Associate Publisher and will be responsible for providing editorial support within our small and collegiate team. You will play a key role in the production of new titles throughout the publishing process, liaising with colleagues across the company, as well as authors and agents. This is a varied and creative role for someone with a passion for literary fiction and non-fiction and an exciting opportunity for someone looking to take the next step in their editorial career.
Who we are looking for
You will be supremely organised and curious, with a meticulous eye for detail, good writing skills and enjoy working collaboratively as part of a team. You will also be a passionate reader, and keen to learn as much as possible to help you along the path to commissioning in this area.
You will have at least a year’s experience in an editorial role. The ideal candidate will have experience in:
- Proofreading, checking permissions
- Reading, reporting and making editorial suggestions on manuscripts/proposals
- Working on advance sales materials, metadata, writing TI and other copy
- Communicating effectively with authors and agents
- Collating proofs, checking copy-edits
- Researching sales and statistics, looking for new opportunities

Sceptre is the literary imprint at Hodder & Stoughton, a publisher of iconic brands and books of the year. We publish prize-winners, literary gems and conversation-starting non-fiction. Our authors include David Mitchell, Siri Hustvedt, Jenn Ashworth, Jessica Andrews, Clare Hunter, Noreena Hertz and Hans Rosling.
