Commissioning Editor, Further Education, Hodder Education
Who we are and what we do
The Hodder Education Group is a vibrant and growing business within Hachette UK. Over recent years we have won market share across UK curriculum change, and significantly grown our international business in a wide range of markets. We have made a string of successful acquisitions, including adding Rising Stars and Galore Park to our Primary business, and acquired key lists in the Caribbean, Singapore and Scotland. We are a leading player in educational assessment and Further Education publishing.
The company is the two-time winner of the British Book Industry Awards (2015 and 2016; shortlisted 2017); on both occasions the judges commented on the energy and dynamism evident within Hodder Education, making it ‘obviously a great place to work.’
What you’ll be doing
We are now looking for someone to be part of the creative and commercial drive behind our vocational and Further Education publishing: commissioning print and digital materials and working closely with colleagues to build an even more exciting range of resources and services for teachers and learners. We can shape your list ownership based on your interests and experience, but opportunities include hospitality & catering, childcare, health and social care, computing, design & technology, construction and building services.
You will have the opportunity to:
- Drive our market research across a range of vocational markets in UK colleges (and schools)
- Spend lots of time talking with teachers, students, awarding organisations and relevant industry bodies
- Commission new titles and series based on market needs across print and digital media to ensure the continued, profitable growth of your lists
- Actively manage backlist publishing on your designated lists
- Work closely with colleagues in Sales and Marketing; and Design and Production
Who we’re looking for
You will probably have been commissioning for two - three years, ideally in UK education, and are now looking to work more autonomously and to ‘own’ an important part of our business. Experience of UK vocational qualifications and the FE sector is a big plus.
You will have worked on educational resources being developed in line with changing curriculum requirements and shown that you can balance curriculum demands with a deep knowledge of practical teaching. You should have a deep understanding of the issues facing teachers and students.
You will also have the personality to develop successful and long-lasting partnerships with authors and other organisations. Our FE partnerships are particularly important to us.
What we offer
This is your opportunity to work on a high-profile, dynamic and fast-growing part of our business. You’ll work as part of a committed team in a creative and enterprising environment. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package.
Hachette employs people on the basis of their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.
If you are shortlisted and need us to make any adjustments to help you attend for interview, please let us know.
