Senior Commissioning Editor, Headline

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

Who we are and what we do

Headline Home is a lifestyle imprint with a focus on cookery, parenting, health and wellbeing, mindfulness, popular psychology and trend-led lifestyle titles. We are part of the Headline Division of Hachette UK, and home to numerous bestselling authors including Mary Berry, Raymond Blanc, Nadiya Hussain, Miguel Barclay, Clemency Burton-Hill, Max Whitlock and Lauren Bravo.

What you’ll be doing

You will be a key member of our team as you help to shape the future of the Headline Home list and drive further growth. You will commission and publish unmissable black and white non-fiction titles with a lifestyle focus. You’ll be looking at UK and global market trends, spotting potential ideas for books as well as developing your own, maintaining external contacts and exploring innovative ways to reach new readers.

Working alongside the Publishing Director, you will be responsible for attracting exciting new talent, bringing books to market with creativity and ambition, and expanding the range of our commissioning. You will be an ambassador for the list, working closely with internal and external stakeholders to champion Headline Home books and authors.

Who we’re looking for

We are looking for a pro-active, ideas-led, ambitious and energetic commissioner to join us in a maternity cover capacity from mid-May 2020 for 10-12 months, for four or five days a week. (The salary displayed is the fulltime amount, for a four day a week contract it would be pro rated accordingly).

If you have a successful track record for pairing original ideas with talented writers and a knack for spotting the latest market trends and acting on them quickly, we want to hear from you. You could be relatively new to commissioning or have a number of bestsellers under your belt – the salary and job title will reflect that.

Reporting to the Publishing Director at Headline Home you will have complete ownership over your stable of authors from acquisition to publication, and will work with departments across the business to drive the physical, digital and audio strategy for each of your projects. You will be proactive and business-minded with excellent contacts and strong negotiation skills.

You will want to join a small team who think big and share our ambition for our authors, our publishing and what we can achieve together.

What we offer

You will be joining a friendly, committed team of skilled editorial and publishing colleagues, working together to produce books we can all be proud of. As part of Hachette UK, you will have access to competitive benefits, an extensive training library and development schemes such as mentoring.

Our Commitment

Hachette employs people on the basis of their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.

If you are shortlisted and need us to make any adjustments to help you attend for interview, please let us know.
