Commissioning Editor

What you’ll be doing

Reporting to NB’s Editorial Director, we are looking for a Commissioning Editor who understands the needs of business and finance professionals and entrepreneurs. You’ll be curating a list of c. 15 new titles to publish per year, addressing the needs of this community, from guides and primers to inspiring stories that hold the attention and grab the headlines.

Who we are looking for

You will be well connected with a good set of contacts. You will know what the big topics are, be close enough to your customers to anticipate what’s coming around the next corner, and have a passion for spotting exciting new voices before they hit the mainstream.

More important than an editorial background is the desire to put your stamp on our publishing, and to help plot the growth of this exciting business. The role offers a rare chance to help shape the next phase of growth for a well-established and profitable book imprint within a creative and supportive environment. We are looking for a self-starter with entrepreneurial flair who thinks like an owner and is ready to commission in line with their vision. You will be just as happy directly approaching potential authors with original publishing ideas of your own, as you are mapping out category expansion plans, or breathing new life into existing books. A team player, you will be passionate about author care, an effective relationship builder, and someone who embraces divergent thinking and has a resilient growth mindset.

What we offer

Our staff are our greatest asset and our benefits reflect this. In addition to 25 days annual leave days per year + bank holidays, we have an extensive list of benefits that include: a wide-ranging training library, development programmes including mentoring, Cycle to Work vouchers, Private Medical Insurance, eye care vouchers, up to 70% off book purchases, a charity book shelf, 2 volunteer days per year to use at your charity of choice, many employee networks to join, summer hours (finishing at 1pm on Fridays during the summer months!), season ticket loans, rent deposit loans, generous pension schemes and much more!

Please note, we're currently recruiting for this role in one of the following Hachette UK office locations: London, Sheffield, Newcastle, Manchester or Edinburgh.

Who we are and what we do

An exciting opportunity has come up for a talented professional to join the NB non-fiction publishing team to help us in our mission to become the no.1 publisher for business and finance professionals and entrepreneurs. We are experts at publishing for professional communities; from start-up business owners to coaches, we understand the reader’s aspirations and obstacles, and bring them inspirational and practical books by expert authors.

While an editorial background would be useful for this role, we are less interested in publishing experience and more interested in your vision, your desire to build a successful and diverse list of books, a strong understanding of the market, and a broad international outlook.

We are on a mission to serve more audiences than ever before and to support underrepresented communities across the business category with inspiring, diverse and thought-provoking books from talented and ground-breaking new voices. Known for our smart, distinctive publishing, our authors are regularly bestsellers and award-winners, from the definitive start-up guide SELF MADE by Bianca Miller-Cole and Byron Cole to John Amaechi’s Sunday Times bestseller, THE PROMISES OF GIANTS.

With offices in London and throughout the UK, as well as in Boston, NB is home to authors whose ideas spark new insights and open up new worlds of learning and development. Our US foothold sets us apart from other publishers. Our Editorial, Sales and Marketing base in Boston gives us fantastic inroads into the biggest market on earth, helping us reach more readers and attract the best authors and talent to our list.

As part of the Hachette Group, our titles are sold by an award-winning, international sales team. We combine the meticulous focus of a collaborative editorial team with the collective global insight and networks of our parent company.

Our Commitment

Hachette employs people on the basis of their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.

If you are shortlisted and need us to make any adjustments to help you attend for interview, please let us know.
