Head of Rights, John Murray Press (Professional Lists)
What you’ll be doing
This is a new position handling the sale of all rights in the John Murray Press Professional Lists which include Jessica Kingsley Publishing, John Murray Learning, Nicholas Brealey, Hodder Faith, Chambers Reference and Sheldon Press. You will be responsible for creating successful growth strategies for rights revenues in each of these publishing imprints. Along with a Rights Executive, you will work with editorial teams at all stages of the acquisitions process, ensuring that we acquire and exploit the best possible range of rights for our authors, and work with publishers and customers across the world to maximise the value of those rights for our authors.
Who we are looking for
You will create successful growth strategies for rights revenues in each of the publishing imprints you work across. You are likely to have excellent relationships in different rights territories, particularly with academic and professional publishers and will develop and exploit commercial opportunities in new and developing markets.
You will already have a successful career in rights selling with excellent negotiation and communication skills. Commercial and financially literate, you will be a motivating manager, as this position will include the management of a Rights Executive (Professional Lists). You will build strong relationships with clients, agents and authors and work closely with colleagues in house to provide feedback to editors for new books acquisitions. Experience in selling children’s titles would also be useful. The successful candidate will report to the Rights Director.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Rights Department at Hodder & Stoughton, Headline, John Murray Press and Quercus. The Rights Department is a team of ten people, and we handle a huge variety of rights across a wide range of genres from US and translation through to film and television and we are defined by both our focus on budgets as well as strong emphasis on author and customer care.
