Senior Commissioning Editor/Editorial Director (Fixed-Term Cover), Hodder & Stoughton

What you’ll be doing

We are looking for an experienced editor and commissioner to join the Lifestyle and Yellow Kite team to cover a period of parental leave and oversee and manage the creation and successful publishing of 10–15 existing titles, alongside developing and acquiring new titles for the list.

The role will include seeing through the delivery of manuscripts, editorial work, and the publishing of various titles already acquired, while working closely with authors, agents, in-house and freelance teams and your direct reports in doing so. You will also help to grow our list of trailblazing authors at Yellow Kite, acquiring 2–5 new titles, ranging from lifestyle non-fiction, food & drink, health, wellbeing and inspirational memoir to smart thinking and gift.

You will be a champion for the 360-degree publishing life cycle of a book, regularly presenting and updating on projects in-house to key stakeholders and internal teams. You will be highly responsive, adaptable, able to write creative cover briefs and copy, provide excellent author care and have the stamina needed to push ideas and ambition forwards to meet sales targets and deliver the best success for a book, your authors and the list. You will be the first point of contact for authors and their agents in-house and be able to effectively communicate on plans, timelines and requirements, providing support as needed and ensuring all in-house teams are feeding into this.

This is an exciting opportunity to become part of a highly successful team which consistently delivers bestsellers, and gain experience editing, managing and acquiring new books with access to some incredible authors and talent.  The role entails line-managing two junior team members, with the Editorial Directors.

Who we are looking for

• An editor who is passionate about lifestyle non-fiction with a track record of publishing in this area and who is confident dealing with authors and agents

• A creative, thoughtful, commercially minded, instinctive and entrepreneurial team player with a desire to drive through the vision for projects and successfully bring a book and its campaign to life with energy

• Strong written and verbal skills, experienced at editing mono and colour books

• Excellent agent, industry and wider contacts

• Strategically focused, with strong awareness of the financial drivers of the business and profit centre

• Experience of managing members of a team – you will share two direct reports

•  Experience in putting together and publishing colour and cookery books – you will have an awareness of the various challenges around complex illustrated titles and their demands / timeframes / budgets.

• Ability to work collaboratively with Sales, Marketing, Publicity, Rights – to effectively communicate on status of projects, author needs and ambitions and deliver bestsellers

• A champion for high-value titles for the list, to take feedback on-board for the success of a book and present plans internally and externally to the author and their teams

There will be on-the-job training in any systems and processes you are not familiar with. Covering parental leave, this role will be for 9 months with the possibility of an extension.
