Senior Desk Editor (Illuminate Publishing), Hodder Education

Please Note: The application deadline for this job has now passed.

What you’ll be doing

We are now looking for a Senior Desk Editor who will sit at the heart of our editorial processes for Illuminate, co-ordinating experienced freelance teams and taking on your own editorial projects.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Work across a variety of subjects
  • Co-ordinate and manage a large freelance team
  • Bring your skills in budgeting and timely delivery to the list
  • Work as a core part of a new team within Hodder Education
  • Play a core role in delivering quality for our customers

Who we are looking for

You will have a strong editorial track record, ideally in UK education, and are now looking to work more autonomously and to play a lead editorial role in a new and important part of our business. Experience of working with large freelance teams and with market-leading authors would be very valuable. Also, working with awarding-body endorsement processes.

You will have worked on educational resources being developed in line with changing curriculum requirements and show that you can balance those demands with a commitment to editorial quality. You should have – or want to have – an understanding of the issues facing teachers and students and be equally comfortable working with publishing for ‘general’ and ‘vocational’ qualifications.

You will also have the personality to develop successful and long-lasting partnerships with freelancers, authors and others.

What we offer

Our staff are our greatest asset and our benefits reflect this. In addition to 25 days annual leave days per year + bank holidays, we have an extensive list of benefits that include: a wide-ranging training library, development programmes including mentoring, Cycle to Work vouchers, Private Medical Insurance, eye care vouchers, up to 70% off book purchases, a charity book shelf, 2 volunteer days per year to use at your charity of choice, many employee networks to join, delicious subsidized canteen food, summer hours (finishing at 1pm on Fridays during the summer months!), season ticket loans, rent deposit loans, generous pension schemes and much more!

You could be based at our wonderful offices on the Embankment in London or in Banbury, Oxfordshire. And we are happy to discuss a range of many flexible-working options.

Who we are and what we do

Illuminate Publishing is now part of the Hodder Education Group. We are looking for a creative Senior Desk Editor to lead editorial work across the Illuminate Publishing lists, working with our amazing authors and partners to continue the Illuminate story.

Illuminate Publishing has achieved strong growth in market share since being founded in 2010 through a balance of publishing for overlooked exam courses, noticeably for the WJEC and eduqas awarding bodies, and working with key authors to create market leading positions in subjects like psychology.

The Hodder Education Group is a vibrant and growing business within Hachette UK. Over recent years we have won market share across UK curriculum change, and significantly grown our international business in a wide range of markets. We have made a string of successful acquisitions, including adding Rising Stars, Galore Park and TeeJay Maths to our business, and acquired key lists in the Caribbean and Singapore. We are a leading player in educational assessment and Further Education.

Our Commitment

Hachette employs people on the basis of their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from a base as broad as the world of readers we want to reach, with a wide and representative range of age, faith, disability, race, gender, sexuality and socio-economic, regional and cultural backgrounds.
